BERRI LOOKOUT TOWER

Public BBQ

The converted water tower in Berri's town centre proved an unexpectedly rewarding detour during my Murray River travels. At 15.4 metres high, this free lookout offers excellent views across the town and glimpses of the mighty Murray winding through the landscape. The climb up the internal stairs is manageable for most ages, though the metal surfaces can be slippery when wet, something to mind during winter visits. What struck me most was the tower's practical conversion from infrastructure to attraction, a clever bit of recycling that gives visitors 360-degree views without the expense of purpose-built facilities. Street parking is plentiful and free, making it easily accessible. While some might wish for greater height to truly showcase the river's majesty, the current vantage point provides a pleasant overview of Berri's layout and surrounding countryside. A worthwhile leg-stretch that demonstrates how old infrastructure can find new life serving the community and visitors alike.
